Black. Fat. Femme: Revealing the Power of Visibly Queer Voices in Media and Learning to Love Yourself

In Black. Fat. Femme.: Revealing the Power of Visibly Queer Voices in Media and Learning to Love Yourself, podcaster, recognized speaker, media critic, educator, and professor, Dr. Jonathan P. Higgins delivers an inspiring and honest discussion of how the author, and other Black Fat Femmes like them, have come to find and understand their identity.

You'll discover how being at the intersection of multiple identities, causes, and communities shapes people and how they see the world. You'll also learn about how public figures like André Leon Talley, Miss J Alexander, and Miss Lawrence have helped people figure out more about who they are and what is possible in their own lives.

Black. Fat. Femme. explores the importance of substantial representation in the media for marginalized people and discusses the pioneers who fought so hard to be authentically who they were, both onscreen and off. The book also explains how and why Black Fat Femme people have been left out and erased from LGBTQ+ media and conversations.

From the author's own coming-out story and the role that media played in it to the concepts of chosen family, femininity, and the meaning of words like "queen," the book examines subjects that are important, not just to Black, fat, and feminine cis-men, but to people everywhere.

For anyone interested in understanding and supporting intersectional identities, Black. Fat. Femme. is a one-of-a-kind book that will show you the world through entirely new eyes.

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly (33 1/3)

Breaking the global record for streams in a single day, nearly 10 million people around the world tuned in to hear Kendrick Lamar's sophomore album in the hours after its release. To Pimp a Butterfly was widely hailed as an instant classic, garnering laudatory album reviews, many awards, and even a canonized place in Harvard's W. E. B. Du Bois archive. Why did this strangely compelling record stimulate the emotions and imaginations of listeners?
This book takes a deep dive into the sounds, images, and lyrics of To Pimp a Butterfly to suggest that Kendrick appeals to the psyche of a nation in crisis and embraces the development of a radical political conscience. Kendrick breathes fresh life into the Black musical protest tradition and cultivates a platform for loving resistance. Combining funk, jazz, and spoken word, To Pimp a Butterfly's expansive sonic and lyrical geography brings a high level of innovation to rap music. More importantly, Kendrick's introspective and philosophical songs compel us to believe in a future where, perhaps, we gon' be alright.

“Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood” edited by bell hooks

In this memoir of perceptions and ideas, renowned feminist intellectual bell hooks presents a stirringly intimate account of growing up in the South. Stitching together the gossamer threads of her girlhood memories, hooks shows us one strong-spirited child’s journey toward becoming a writer. Along the way, hooks sheds light on the vulnerability of children, the special unfurling of female creativity, and the imbalance of a society that confers marriage’s joys upon men and its silences on women. In a world where daughters and daddies are strangers under the same roof, and crying children are often given something to cry about, hooks uncovers the solace to be found in solitude, the comfort to be had in the good company of books.

The History of Roses 🌹

In February of 2022 we produced a month-long installation pop up called "Roses, A Black History Month Experience".  During this pop up we met many beautiful people, laughed, shared experiences, and talked books and music.  Your support and excitement affirmed to us that a space with the energy to amplify the Black experience through books and music was needed in Las Vegas. We immediately set a plan in motion and 3 months later, The Analog Dope Store was born in May of 2022.

The Present 🎁

The Analog Dope Store is not your average bookstore. Founded by life and business partners, Rachelle and Charlie, Analog Dope is a reflection of our unyielding passion for books, music and art.  Analog Dope specializes in offering a lovingly curated selection of books, vinyl records and an all around dope experience when you enter the space.  As a Black-owned, woman-owned, queer-owned shop, Rachelle and Charlie have created a diverse and welcoming safe space that energizes the community and amplifies literature and music from Black, POC, LGBTQ, underserved and cultural communities around the world.

Since opening we’ve made a positive impact within the community by hosting free events, a Frist Friday vendor marketplace to support entrepreneurs and creatives, financial literacy workshops, author events, children’s book readings and more.

The Future 🔮

The future begins with imagination.  Even though we are all uncertain what the future holds, it can be beautiful to imagine.  Imagine your history, stories and characters that reflect your experiences. Imagine the music that has been and will be the soundtrack to your life amplified in one space. The Analog Dope Store is committed to a future that continues to raise the consciousness of the community through books, music, education and the transmission of the culture to the next generation.

Black Joy Book Signing Flyer

Author Talk & Book Signing with Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts

Join us at The Analog Dope Store for a special Black History Month conversation with NAACP Image award winning author Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts centering Black Joy, Resilience and Restoration!

Black Joy: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration

When Tracey M. Lewis-Giggetts wrote an essay on Black joy for The Washington Post, she had no idea just how deeply it would resonate. But the outpouring of positive responses affirmed her own lived experience: that Black joy is not just a weapon of resistance, it is a tool for resilience.

With this book, Tracey aims to gift her community with a collection of lyrical essays about the way joy has evolved, even in the midst of trauma, in her own life. Detailing these instances of joy in the context of Black culture allows us to recognize the power of Black joy as a resource to draw upon, and to challenge the one-note narratives of Black life as solely comprised of trauma and hardship.
